The Valuable Time of Maturity - by Mário de Andrade

Mário de Andrade , Brazilian (1893-1945)

The Valuable Time of Maturity

~ by Mário de Andrade ~

I counted my years
and realized that
I have less time to live by,
than I have lived so far.
I have more past than future.
I feel like that boy who got a bowl of cherries.
At first, he gobbled them,
but when he realized there were only few left,
he began to taste them intensely.
I no longer have time to deal with mediocrity.
I do not want to be in meetings where flamed egos parade.
I am bothered by the envious,
who seek to discredit the most able,
to usurp their places, coveting their seats,
talent, achievements and luck.
I do not have time for endless conversations,
useless to discuss about the lives of others
who are not part of mine.
I no longer have the time to manage
sensitivities of people who despite their chronological age, are immature.
I hate to confront those that struggle for power,
those that ‘do not debate content, just the labels’.
My time has become scarce to debate labels,
I want the essence.
My soul is in a hurry …
Not many cherries in my bowl,
I want to live close to human people, very human,
who laugh of their own stumbles,
and away from those turned smug
and overconfident with their triumphs,
away from those filled with self-importance.
The essential is what makes life worthwhile.
And for me, the essentials are enough!
Yes, I’m in a hurry.
I’m in a hurry to live with the intensity that only maturity can give.
I do not intend to waste any of the remaining cherries.
I am sure they will be exquisite, much more than those eaten so far.
My goal is to reach the end satisfied
and at peace with my loved ones and my conscience.
And per Confucius “We have two lives
and the second begins when you realize you only have one.”

"On My way to Bamako" ~ by EB & HK

"On My way to Bamako"

~ by Eric Bibb & Habib Koité ~

======================

Well, I'm on my way to Bamako
A place I always wanna go
I'm on my way to Bamako
To see what I can see.

Got a good friend there, Habib Koité
A great musician, by the way
Got a good friend there, Habib Koité
Gonna meet his family.

It's my first trip to West Africa
But I'm pretty sure
In some kind of way
It's gonna feel like coming home.

Well, I'm on my way to Bamako
Gonna leave behind the ice and snow
I'm on my way to Bamako
To see what I can see.

Gonna turn my face up to the sun
Close my eyes and thank the one
Turn my eyes up to the sun
That shines in Bamako.

It's my first trip to West Africa
And I'm pretty sure
In some kind of way
It's gonna feel like coming home.

It's my first trip to West Africa
And I'm pretty sure
In some kind of way
It's gonna feel like coming home.

Feel like coming home.

The Lovely Jennifer Garner ~ by Hénock Gugsa

Jennifer Garner as Cinderella!

 The Lovely Jennifer Garner

~ by Hénock Gugsa ~

I love Jennifer Garner on Instagram! She's such a fun person! She can cover the whole gamut of human emotion ... the whole spectrum! She can be funny (hilarious), she can be serious (thoughtful) ... she can be goofy and self-deprecating; or she can be elegant and a devastating beauty! Her hobbies and talents are just awe-inspiring ... she's into gardening and cooking, she connects with friends for spiritual support, and I don't know what else ... probably a ton of other social activities, that we don't even know, occupies her time. Of-course, she's a mom and she keeps that private, which is what it should be.

In general, I just love that she is not a show-off ... instead she shares those things she runs across that crack her up, that inspire her, that elevate her knowledge or life experience. I follow Jen's Instagram not only to catch that gorgeous dimply face and her genuine, unaffected smiles but also because her posts offer great source material! Thank you, Jennifer Garner! ❤️

Prince Alemayehu Théodros of Ethiopia ~ by TPO

Prince Alemayehu of Ethiopia

Prince Alemayehu Théodros of Ethiopia **

~ by TPO ~

~ the teenage son of Emperor Théodros and heir apparent to the throne.
~ Emperor Théodros committed suicide rather than be taken captive prisoner by the British after the Battle of Maqdella.
~ The British, fearing to leave behind a potential future enemy, forcibly took the boy and his mother as prisoners on a duress-filled voyage to England.  The mother, Empress Tiruworq, died early during the journey,
~ Young Alemayehu Théodros  arrived in England at Queen Victoria's court where she assigned a guardian to raise him.  It was decided already he was never to return to Ethiopia. A few years later, at the age of 18, prince Alemayehu died from the horrible English climate (and pleurisy) as well as incurable homesickness. He was buried within the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Ethiopia's Good Habits ~ by Hénock Gugsa

Ethiopia's Good Habits ~ by Hénock Gugsa

The Zen of "Ethiopian-Walking with a Stick on  the Shoulders" ...

The following is how an Ethiopian on Facebook explained this unusual physical posture :
<< In Ethiopia, walking is not just a utilitarian act of going from point A to point B, but also a deliberative and meditative act of detachment from the woes of the world. A walking stick is a de rigueur accompaniment beyond protection.

The stick rests on the shoulders with the hands draped over the stick. This pose relaxes the body and allows easy breathing, ventilation and keeps the head upright and the eyes focused on the horizon. The mind is emptied of all thought and the easy movement of the feet keep the mind alternatively ticking and following the process.

When an Ethiopian sets out on a long journey of several miles and days, the mind is relaxed to a point where the trip is just a minor part of the process until there is no difference between one mile and one thousand miles.

This, my friends, is how Ethiopians [are] not cut [off] from their roots ... [they] walk ... like angels! >>  🤔

About Dreams of Death ~ by Hénock Gugsa

About Dreams of Death

~ by Hénock Gugsa ~

F M ===> Hénock Gugsa, I died a few times in my dreams some twenty years ago ... watching myself falling down miles inside my sofa. It fascinated and terrified me to find myself falling into a bottomless pit ... I later understood that I was in states of apnea.

H G ===> I was about to ask if you were aware that you were dying while you were dying.  That would take some doing!  The sense of presence while one's life is being extinguished must be a self-defeating process !!!

In some similar situations, we are aware that we are dreaming and that at any moment we would wake up. Then the dream gets instantly extinguished in the same way an automobile tire deflates with a sudden whoosh.

Speaking for myself, I have dreamt of some weight on my chest trying to squeeze all the breath from my lungs.  But I was always able to get out of that situation by telling myself that it was all in my head, and that it was not real.  This fail-safe mechanism was created in me a long time ago (maybe in my childhood), and now it automatically kicks in whenever I am in this dream-state. 🤔 🤨 🥴

F M ===> Hénock Gugsa, I went through that many times as well. I also remember hearing gongs and noises while having the certitude that I was 'exiting' myself. Some of these experiences definitely challenged me at many levels, and having read the Buddhist book of the deads gave it a very particular flavor 🙄... 😬

An Ideal World ~ by Hénock Gugsa

An Ideal World *

~ by Hénock Gugsa ~

[On a serenely peaceful wintry landscape, a lone bear encounters a lone wolf!]

    “Are you lost?” asked Bear.

“No, I’m not lost. Are you?” asked Wolf.

“No, I’m not lost. I’m out for a walk to feel the cold on my face, and to enjoy the quiet of the woods when it snows. What are you doing?”

“I’m out for a walk to feel the cold under my paws, and to listen to the crunching of the snow as I walk.”

“Do you want to walk with me?” asked Bear.

    “Sure,” said Wolf.

And so they head into the woods furry side by furry side, wet nose near wet nose, aware that they are “both creatures made to be comfortable in the very cold.” They savor the splendor of this forest world they share, smelling “the wet bark on the trees,” listening to “the small sounds” of the snowflakes falling on their fur, looking closely at the multitude of shapes.

Foundations of Alienation ~ per Amelia Horgan

Karl Marx

Foundations of Alienation

~per Amelia Horgan~ *

Karl Marx (1818-1883) is most famous as a critic of capitalism, but at the heart of his critique can be found a desperate plea for the transformation of work. People, he argues, express themselves and create the world through creative and collective activity. This natural tendency is twisted into something unrecognizable in work under capitalism. He didn’t just think work around him was bad because it took place in noisy and dangerous conditions, or for low wages and long hours. The problem of work was a fundamental one: under capitalism, work takes something human and turns it into something monstrous. The forces of capital become ravenous, eating up all that is human, sucking on the very lifeblood of society.

The True Believer ~ according to Eric Hoffer

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983)

The True Believer ~ according to Eric Hoffer *

by TPO

Eric Hoffer came to public attention with the 1951 publication of his first book, The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, which consists of a preface and 125 sections, which are divided into 18 chapters. Hoffer analyzes the phenomenon of "mass movements," a general term that he applies to revolutionary parties, nationalistic movements, and religious movements.

He summarizes his thesis in §113: "A movement is pioneered by men of words, materialized by fanatics and consolidated by men of actions."

Hoffer argues that fanatical and extremist cultural movements, whether religious, social, or national, arise when large numbers of frustrated people, believing their own individual lives to be worthless or spoiled, join a movement demanding radical change. But the real attraction for this population is an escape from the self, not a realization of individual hopes: "A mass movement attracts and holds a following not because it can satisfy the desire for self-advancement, but because it can satisfy the passion for self-renunciation."

Hoffer consequently argues that the appeal of mass movements is interchangeable: in the Germany of the 1920s and the 1930s, for example, the Communists and National Socialists were ostensibly enemies, but sometimes enlisted each other's members, since they competed for the same kind of marginalized, angry, frustrated people. For the "true believer," Hoffer argues that particular beliefs are less important than escaping from the burden of the autonomous self.

Harvard historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. said of The True Believer: "This brilliant and original inquiry into the nature of mass movements is a genuine contribution to our social thought."

* WIKIPEDIA
---------------------------------------------------------------
In my opinion, "true believers" are crazed people who eventually realize the futility of their ideas or ideals and then become cynical counterrevolutionaries!  My best go-to poet, William Butler Yeats, forever put this little catchy poem in my head:
      The Great Day

Hurrah for revolution and more cannon-shot!
A beggar upon horseback lashes a beggar on foot.
Hurrah for revolution and cannon come again!
The beggars have changed places, but the lash goes on.

The Honey Hunter --- The Lost Soul ! ~ by Hénock Gugsa

The Honey Hunter – The Lost Soul !
~ story from Benishangul-Gumuz, Ethiopia ~
Compiled, revised and presented

by Hénock Gugsa ( ሄኖክ  ጉግሣ )
=============================================

Once there was a man who made his living by collecting honey from forests and caves and selling it at the market place.  In those olden times, there were no hives, but bees made use of certain hollow places on trees and crevices on cave walls.  He was helped by a friendly bird who gave him directions to where honey may be found.

One day, he saw some bees buzzing around a tree, and naturally, he concluded that there was some honey to be had. So he gathered a bunch of kindling and lit a small fire to create smoke to distract the bees.  Having directed the smoke inside the hollow tree, he was able to garner large swaths of honey.  As it happened, he had not had the foresight to bring a goatskin sack which could accommodate a big haul.  So, he left what amount of honey he had collected on the ground at the bottom of the tree, and he went off to look for a sack.

Upon his return with a sack, he discovered that all the honey was gone. What had happened was that a porcupine, a 'jart' (ጃርት), had taken the honey and hidden it in a nearby cave.  She was planning to call all her friends and throw a party where they would engorge their tummies with the godsend honey!

The unfortunate victim of the dastardly theft  began scouring the surrounding area for a possible cache of the stolen honey.  As the man approached the entrance of the thief's cave, he heard a noise.

“Someone who took my honey is in there,” he thought.

He entered the cave and saw an evil spirit, a 'zar' (ዛር), disguised as a woman. She was baking and fermenting cereals to prepare t’ala (ጠላ).

The 'zar' snarled, “What do you want?”

The hunter said, “I had gathered some honey and went to look for a sack. When I came back, all the honey was gone. At first, I thought the thief was a man, but then I decided it was a porcupine because I saw her footprints near this cave. Porcupines are my enemies and I want to destroy them.”

The 'zar' frowned and hissed.  “These porcupines are food for us zars. They are like sheep and goats to us. So if you harm them, a bad spell will fall upon you. Look elsewhere for others who might have stolen your honey. Leave the porcupines alone!”

She gave him some hard unleavened bread, k’it’a (ቂጣ). As soon as he went out the door, he was immediately turned into a porcupine. Instead of two legs he now had four and the thorns of the porcupine stood up all over his body!

There was nothing to do but seek some of his men friends for help with his predicament.  As it happened, on his way he found himself in the middle of a big fire that had broken out of nowhere.  He got very badly burnt but managed to flee.  He ran and ran and jumped into the sea. When he came back out of the sea, he was changed back into a man.

Having then learned his lesson, he began to live in the bushes, eating berries and natural foods from trees.  He was now neither like a porcupine nor like a human being.  And so he was lost and unapproachable ... to all living things!

He lived like a savage hermit.  It is believed he still lives to this day!

The Best Place for Crying ~ by TPO

🌟🌟🌟 Shower is the best place for crying.*
============================

The best place I have found to cry
is in the shower
You become one with the water
It drinks your tears faster than they come
You don’t feel them
You only feel what’s necessary
Your sorrow
Your grief
The shower envelopes you
Hugs you
Holds you
In it’s also
Tearful embrace

Halfway down the Stairs - by A.A Milne

👞👞👞💥💥💥👞👞👞

     Halfway down the stairs
    Is a stair
    Where I sit.
    There isn’t any
    Other stair
    Quite like
    It.
    I’m not at the bottom,
    I’m not at the top;
    So this is the stair
    Where
    I always
    Stop.

    Halfway up the stairs
    Isn’t up
    And isn’t down.
    It isn’t in the nursery,
    It isn’t in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
    Run round my head:
    “It isn’t really
    Anywhere!
    It’s somewhere else
    Instead!”
