Marian Anderson: A Great American Artist - by TPO

Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson (1897 - 1993)

Jean Sibelius, a 70-year-old famous Finnish composer, was so moved by her, he dedicated his song “Solitude” to her. He said to her,“The roof of my house is too low for your voice.”

In 1925, while in Salzburg performing at the Mozarteum Festival, Arturo Toscanini, a very prestigious conductor, heard her sing and told her, “Yours is a voice such as one hears once in a hundred years.”
